Hawaiian Airlines, the 11th largest airline in the U.S., announced its plans to provide its passengers with Apple’s iPad mini.
Thanks to the contract with Bluebox Avionics, an in-flight entertainment system supplier, the airlines will be able to offer the iPad minis in 14 planes by September 1. In all 767-300 aircrafts, 1,400 tablets will be deployed to cover the 14 routes ranging from Honolulu to the U.S. mainland, Asia, the South Pacific.
“Hawaiian Airlines‘ signature on-board hospitality is already very popular with travelers, but we wanted to go even further to ensure our customers’ travel experience is more enjoyable,” said Blaine Miyasato, Hawaiian Airlines vice president of product development. “With the help of Bluebox Avionics, we’re building on our acclaimed inflight service by incorporating the latest in popular consumer tech products to enhance our in-flight entertainment options.”
With the mini, passengers will have access to over 100 hours of recently released movies, TV shows and various games. All these options will be available for free for those, travelling in Business Class, while the passengers of Economy Class will have to pay for this service $15 at the gate or $17 in-flight.
The planes have their own in-flight entertainment systems built into planes’ seat backs, which as a rule, can be used free of charge for all passengers.
It is not the first time, when iPads are involved in flying space. JetBlue and American Airlines have recently started using its pilots and cockpits with the Apple devices to manage mapping tools and other in-flight options. Moreover, Australian airline Qantas is already offering its passengers iPads for in-flight entertainment purposes.
